THINKING ABOUT POTTY TRAINING?

Ring The Bells !

A popular way to teach a puppy to signal when it needs to go outside (or older dogs too) is to have it ring the bells.  They catch on fast and love it.

Until recently it's been difficult to find bells which are strong, and won't break if nipped with  sharp young teeth.  But now at last, there are  POOCHIE BELLS made especially for the purpose.  They are stylish, strong and  workmanlike, come with fashionable hangers if needed and complement any decor.

Please don't use your TRAVEL crate for home  crating training !

Your puppy will arrive in a carrier like this. They are excellent for travel but NOT recommended for a home crate. Your puppy may associate this crate with leaving home and could be afraid that you are not his/her forever home at all!

Also, we think the open wire crates are much better for home use, because your dog feels more a part of the family and won't feel  banished as it would in an enclosed crate with new clear view of where you are.   The open wire crate will make your puppy feel part of the family while being restrained, when you are not able to supervise. Remember Crates are NOT a substitute for training!  Puppies or dogs should not be crated for longer than overnight, or three hours straight during the day.

The wire crate you will find takes up no more room than a basket, and can be dressed up with a see through curtain to blend with the décor of your home. They also will fold up for you to take with you when visiting or on vacation. Scroll down to see suggested sizes.

This is a car seat harness. Even when your puppy is still little you should buckle him in safely just as you would your children.

Buy a small breed harness for while he is a puppy, and progress to a larger one when he is fully grown. These harnesses are not expensive.

COLLARS

Training Collars are a personal choice, but our recommendation is to always use a slip chain  collar [sometimes inappropriately called choke collar] This collar when fitted correctly acts as an instant reward system. You should ALWAYS lead your puppy with a slack leash. When the leash is loose, so is the collar and when the dog pulls the collar tightens, thus helping to teach your dog not to pull.

A HUGE BENEFIT IS THAT IT IS PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR A PUPPY TO SLIP OUT OF THIS COLLAR AND RUN OFF INTO DANGER.

There is also a  long link chain. The long links will not tangle or damage the dog's coat . Another advantage of the chain collar is it gives a good warning that it is going to tighten when the dog forgets and rushes forward. The chain will quietly "clink clink" as the ring slips along the long links.  To put the check collar (slip chain collar)  on correctly stand in front of your dog, slide the chain/cord through the end loop , then reduce the size of the loop so you get what looks like a P slide the circle part of the P over the dogs head and attach the leach to the ring at the bottom if the P stick it is that easy. P for Puppy!!! See Photos How to fit

Walking your dog on a "fixed" collar is NOT recommended  especially when young and learning, as it will instinctively teach your dog to pull, causing discomfort to the dogs windpipe and a less than a pleasant walk for you. If you have taught your dog to walk on a leash properly you should be able to have a bag of groceries in each arm and the dogs leash over two fingers and not feel a tug from your dog!!! DO NOT use a retractable leash until your dog understands how to heel gently at your side when asked, then go forward "Off you go play" when offered and return to heel again when asked.

The Adjustable fixed collar is ideal for wearing in the home with your dogs name tags. Webbing is easy on the coat and dries quickly when swimming or in the snow and can be adjusted as the puppy grows.

COLLAR SIZES FOR YOUR NEW PUPPY aged 9 to 10 weeks:

Miniature:  Whilst your new puppy is still growing you can purchase an adjustable collar.  When at its smallest size, it should measure approx 5 inches.

Medium:    At its smallest adjustment should measure approx 6 inches

Standard:   At its smallest adjustment should measure approx 8 inches

TREATS and CHEW TOYS FOR TEETHING

Baked dry liver treats and jerky are great tasty training treats. Another training treat I like is cheese, cubed small and left overnight to dry then put in an airtight container. Cheap and nutritious!

Pigs Ear

Bully Stick (not available
in Australia)

Pigs ears and Trotters are good clean house and crate chews that last longer. They will not damage teeth.

Do not give the high density smoked BONES to your dog, they are cooked and can splinter and will damage your dogs teeth.

CAUTION RE PLUSH OR STUFFED TOYS...... These can be dangerous as puppies can chew off pieces and swallow them, which can cause blockages or obstructions requiring surgery.

Almost any toy will be just fine! Here are some favorites of ours.

Treat Ball......Fill it with treats and your puppy/dog will spend hours playing with it as the treats drop out to keep him enjoying the fun.

Another Treat Ball  - The Giggle Ball - that does it all while giggling when the dog rolls it!!

You will be in stitches of laughter too!!

Mat Splitter is a very  handy tool to tease out a difficult mat it cuts and combs at the same time.

Either type of nail clipper is fine.
There are lots of clippers on the market. the size you need is a #15 blade for short/shave and a #7 or #5 for short and fluffy, Though I strongly prefer to cut body coat with scissors.
Hemostats for plucking ear hair.  Use an ear powder for best grip.

CONTAINMENT

There are lots of different pet and child barriers, they are mostly used to block stairways and doorways to contain your puppy to the OK parts of the house. Stairways are very important as young puppies should minimize running up and down till they are over 12 months of age to protect their joints during growth.
Window vents are a must in case you have to unexpectedly leave your pet in the car for a while. [NEVER on hot days] Always remove your dog from a stationary car on hot days.

Crate Sizes

Miniatures will be fine in a crate size of around 90cmL 62cmW 70cmH

Mediums will be fine in a crate size of around 105cmL 72cmW 80cmH

Standards will be fine in a crate size of around 120cmL 77cmW 88cmH Most Standards will also be ok in the medium size.
