OUR
POLICY ON HEALTH
MANAGEMENT
It is not
possible for any breeder to guarantee that
they will not breed a dog with an
hereditary disease regardless of the
number of tests carried out on their
breeding stock. The reason for this
is that some of the sixty plus inherited
diseases that are possible are carried on
dominant genes (identifiable on emergence
and able to be terminated through culling
of a breeding line) and others are
recessive (which means they can 'hide' in
apparently healthy dogs and then surface
many generations later.
As new
technological advances are made in the
field of veterinary medicine, Tegan
avails itself of new tests which
become available to ferret out any
possible recessives 'carried' via healthy
dogs.
As our
first driving motivation to create a
new breed of dog was based on our
disillusionment with the health status of
the pure breeds, it stands to reason that
this continues to be an issue close to our
hearts. |
|
How Were The 'Pure' Breeds Created & Developed?
Many of today's 'pure' breeds
originated from a foundation of as
few as five individuals. The
genetic dead-end in which many
modern day 'pure' dog breeds find
themselves, has come about by too -
close inbreeding and line breeding
especially in inexperienced hands.
Tegan and Rutland Manor carry
out continuing anecdotal research in
the pursuit of ongoing health and
vitality in the dogs it breeds, as
well as the ongoing stability of the
truly non shedding and allergy
friendly coat.
Each year,
usually in
September, either Tegan or Rutland Manor tours the
United States, which is the country currently importing
the largest number of our ASD Australian Labradoodles,
for the purpose of monitoring the development of our
dogs, gathering further information and giving
free instruction on care, training and
breeding. Similar services are also
provided on request throughout Australia and other
countries.

Line Breeding, In breeding and Out Crossing
The main
difference between these lies in the level
of breeding one relative to another, as there is
no clear cut definition of any of these terms
and each breeder has their own idea of where the
lines are drawn. Highly incestuous
matings such as father or mother to their own
progeny, or brother to sister etc are considered
by most breeders to be 'inbreeding' whilst
others will consider less incestuous matings
such as bringing a grandparent back into a line
to be line breeding.
Line
breeding can be a valuable tool in the hands of a
thoroughly experienced breeder who is familiar with the
health status debits and credits behind their breeding
stock, but in less knowledgeable hands can be a recipe
for disaster.
Inbreeding
co-efficients of up to 30% are considered low in
'pure' breeds. Tegan breed using an
inbreeding co-efficient of less than 10% with
most in the range of 0.5% to 3%.
During the
development of the Australian Labradoodle, and
following diligent research, several other
breeds were thoughtfully infused at specifically
appropriate times by the Founders, pursuit of the wide and diverse gene
pool necessary to build a foundation of robust
health in the ASD (Australian Service Dog)
Australian Labradoodle, yet at the same time,
not sacrificing the standards of
soundness, temperament and coat type
which had already been achieved.
Three of
the Breeds which were carefully infused at appropriate
intervals Bloodlines were
researched thoroughly for health and temperament
pre-potency and results were monitored and recorded.

N.B. on several
websites the Curly Coated
Retriever was also infused into the
Australian Labradoodle?!. If it
was I have no knowledge of it.
It is not a breed I would have
chosen for a number of reasons, not
the least significant being the
peculiar and strong dog smell
associated with this breed.

History Making Initiatives
|
Rutland Manor and Tegan Breeding and
Research Centers pioneered several
history making initiatives in the
breeding of dogs, whether pure bred
or hybrid.
1.
Rutland Manor donated its dog
database to the ILA (International
Labradoodle Association) now known
as IALA when Beverley Manners
(Founder of the ILA) was
President of the Association. Tegan
donated its database to ALCA.
The dog database of Tegan and
Rutland Manor is the largest in the
world.
CURRENT DAY PEDIGREE CONFUSION
Note: In
the early years, pedigrees were
hand written in times prior to the
use of computers by the founders
Angela and Beverley. As the
Labradoodle population rapidly
exploded, it became increasingly
difficult for two computer
illiterate people to keep track of
so many dogs in this way and we
finally took courage in both hands
and forayed into the world of the
computer. It was a difficult
and challenging road further
complicated by the lack of in those
days, the sophisticated
software available to dog breeders
today.
There
have been human error discrepancies
on a number of pedigrees, which have
been perpetuated in some cases, by
brand new breeders not understanding
how to write out a pedigree. Pet
names have been used instead of
kennel names, and spelling has been
altered in some cases further adding
to the confusion.
Tegan
has employed the services of Anne Safianski expressly to work with
those who are more interested in
sorting and clarifying, rather
than in pointing fingers and over
time most if not all of these
discrepancies should be clarified.
2.
Rutland Manor and Tegan
were the first to introduce Juvenile Spey/Neuter as usual procedure - a
first in either purebred or hybrid
dog breeding. and a practice now
carried out by conscientious
breeders throughout
the world -
3.
Tegan and Rutland Manor were the first in
the world to carry out health
testing on a hybrid breed of dog.
4.
Tegan and Rutland Manor
introduced the 'Guardian Home' or
'Care Home' concept to the
world, wherein breeders place
breeding stock into private
homes to provide them with the
optimum environment of a loving
family situation. |

Skip a Cycle? Or Breed Each Successive
Cycle?
Our
Center breed their females back
to back ( each successive cycle)
The reasons for this are twofold.
Firstly
- Modern
veterinary research indicates that
it is healthier for the breeding
females themselves, greatly reducing
the incidence of uterine cancers.
Secondly
- By
breeding successive cycles and then
retiring the breeding females
several years younger than if they
skipped a cycle each year, these
still-young females have the chance
to find a loving forever home where
they can spend the rest of their
lives as the adored single dog family
companion they deserve to be.
