Angela Rutland - Manners (later to become Angela Cunningham)  was the visionary who was utterly convinced that it would be possible to develop a whole brand new breed of dog  to carry forward from the initial experiment carried out by  Royal Guide Dogs in Melbourne Australia when they crossed the Standard Poodle with the Labrador Retriever.  Angela's  vision was for a very special dog , not only reliably allergy friendly and non shedding, but also with an intellect and intuitive nature which would make it a superlative Service Dog and family companion.

As Angela and her mother Beverley worked to develop  this new breed, there were many disappointments along the way as well as the successes which kept them focused and inspired.  But that story would fill a book!

Within Fifteen  years, world wide popularity of the breed saw many new breeders attempt via other (cheaper) routes to re-create what the founders had done and all kinds of mix and matches,  claim the name 'Labradoodle'. Unfortunately the Associations originally set up to protect the breed, accept these copies for registration which has caused a lot of confusion.  In an effort to set the original breed apart, the founders then called it the  AUSTRALIAN Labradoodle to differentiate it from the lab x poodle x 'whatevers'  which were being accepted for registration.    However within two months of the announcement the associations had changed the name of their registered 'copies' to the AUSTRALIAN Labradoodle.  Something more needed to be done!

These associations have  set up their own 'infusions' program and 'upgrading' schemes in an attempt to replicate, or appear to reproduce  the same dog as developed by the founders.

Amidst claims that anyone breeding with Australian stock has no choice other than to inbreed or linebreed  (FALSE claims)  the associations do not permit any founder endorsed breeder to be a committee member or board member in their associations.  ASD  Licensed Breeders are not discriminated against, neither are they dictated to.  They are free to belong to, or serve on any association committee they choose.  They have however, pledged to maintain the purity of the Australian lines developed by the founders and are the only breeders entitled by law to call their dogs "ASD Australian Labradoodles" or use the trademarked Logo..

In 2006, Curtis Rist founded

The Australian Labradoodle Protection Society

(ALPS)

ALPS is  the ONLY Association endorsed by the Founders of the Breed
( ALPS expects to have its Registry and Database up and running 2007)

Look for these Logos on Breeder websites.   They signify internationally licensed breeders whose breeding programs are endorsed by the Founders of the Breed.

Please Note:

There are now hundreds of Labradoodle breeders particularly in America, and you are encouraged to do your diligent research when choosing where your new family member will come from.  Belonging to an 'Association' may not ensure personal integrity, and you will want a long and friendly association with your breeder for the lifetime of your Labradoodle.

Occasionally a non ASD Labradoodle breeder thinks that by maligning ASD, The Australian Labradoodle Protection Society, or its members, they will exalt themselves to a higher level.   The best Labradoodle breeders do not need to try to denigrate others in order to promote themselves and their dogs.  Such lowly actions suggest other motives.  Reputation from past clients will always be the most sincere and genuine of recommendations.

THE FOLLOWING LETTER SENT BY  ALAA  TO  ITS  MEMBERS CLEARLY ILLUSTRATES THAT THE ASSOCIATION DOES NOT SHARE THE VISION OF THE FOUNDERS OF THE BREED FOR ITS VERY FUTURE.

"Recently the ALAA has evaluated the new ALPS/ASD association and their vision for the Australian Labradoodle as explained on their web page at http://www.alpsdoodles.org/  . It is the feeling of the Board that the ALPS/ASD’s mission and purpose is contrary to the vision of the ALAA.  As ALAA Board members are involved with establishing standards, procedures, and regulations for our association we feel that it is imperative that all Board members be committed to our visionary direction.  Therefore, it has been determined that it is a conflict of interest for policy setting members of the ALAA, officers and committee members, to pledge membership to ALPS/ASD. "

EXCLUSIONS:  There are some very fine breeders who already have a separate breeding program running which includes dogs not descended from the Australian root stock.  These breeders may be eligible for the trademark and Founder Endorsement PROVIDED IT IS CLEARLY EXPLAINED ON THEIR WEBSITES AND DOCUMENTATION THAT THEY ARE RUNNING TWO ENTIRELY SEPARATE PROGRAMS.... One for the Pure Australian Labradoodle, (ASD) as developed by the Founders,  and another for their other Labradoodles.  The ASD Logo must not appear on the pedigree unless the puppy  comes from the Pure breeding program. ASD Breeders who are mingling their two breeding programs are in breach of their Licence Agreement  and will be removed from the ASD breeder listing.
